Brick - Scenic Painting

The second project in my scenic painting class was to paint brick.

First, I restretched fresh canvas over my frame. Then, I mixed some reds, oranges, and yellows to scumble on the background.

Next, I used a thin off-white paint to add in the horizontal grout with a lining stick and small fitch. I measured the brick width at 4" using charcoal to mark and a measuring tape. I added in the verticals every 8", starting every other at 8" and 4" from the edge, respectively.

I added speckling for texture by splattering paint with a chip brush. I used a watery mid brown, Van Dyke brown, and the off-white from the grout. (Below just the mid-brown is complete, but the spatter is more visible the next picture.)

Next, I used a watery brown to darken some of my bricks. I focused mainly on the bricks that looked to pinkish or bright. I used a dark brown to add some shadows under the bricks.

Finally, I added highlights with the off-white, used a grey-brown to muddy some grout, and cleaned up my bricks/splatter.

Tah dah! Brick!
